Every night he shows his “Bernie Madoff Countdown clock” display he has 149 years 347 days 10 hours fifteen mins as well as twenty-five seconds left in prison.

He is an easy, powerless target who can’t sue him.

My guess is because his audience responds to it.
Maybe Letterman was a victim of Madoff’s scam.
Letterman’s material is always topical, hi-brow and intellectually stimulating – unlike that orange-haired kid that replaced Leno.
Audiences enjoy the consistency of the Letterman show – his ‘top ten’ list is a popular staple of the show, and the Madoff countdown has the potential of going on for as long as it remains comical.
It’s easy material that keeps Letterman on top in the ratings.
Letterman’s comedic approach to current events, politics, scandal and the ailing economy helps him identify with his audience; we all suffer, and we all need to escape from it with laughter. -RKO-

Because the humor about teenage pregnancy and casual teenage sex at baseball stadiums has worn pretty thin. It just ain’t as hilarious as it was.
He needs to go back and review the old Steve Allen Show … which he copied.
